Kinabalu National Park – Adventurous Nature Trek

Malaysia is a unique landscape with West and East Malaysia being separated by the South China Sea. The relief of Malaysia changes gradually from coastal plains to hill country. The country is made up of several states that include the popular Singapore, Borneo and Sumatra that are also islands.

On the island of Borneo lies Mount Kinabalu that stands at 4,095.2 meters. Here Kinabalu National Park is one of the most popular attractions for tourists. The park is approximately 90 kilometers from Kota Kinabalu and is found in the West Coast of Sabah, covering 754 square kilometers around Mount Kinabalu. Buses taxis and car rentals are available to and from the park. There are roads and highways to the park headquarters, which is on the south end of Kinabalu Park boundary from Sabah.

Kinabalu National Park has been a national park since 1964 making it one of the very first national parks in the country. And in December 2000 it was chosen as a UNESCO Heritage Site. There are two trails available, one from the top called Timpohon or the other which is called Mesilau Trail. A famous element in the park is Low’s Gully: a 1.6 kilometer deep chasm, 10 kilometers wide which can be found on the side of the mountain peak.

As you trek up the park, you will observe how the terrain changes from ferns and lots of tropical green to a coniferous forest as you hit higher altitudes. Carnivorous pitcher plants and orchids are abundant and make you stop and be fascinated. Try to catch a glimpse of the massive pitcher plant only found in this park: Nepenthes raja. There are quite a few species of pitcher plants at Kinbalu National Park. Most of them and other flora can be encountered on a botanical walk. The biggest bloom in the world also finds its home in the park but is rarely seen since it comes up seldom and then withers in a matter of days. It is known to emit the smell of decaying flesh.

At the park, visitors often opt for guided walks; you can even take in a multi-vision show and linger at the Kinabalu Natural History Gallery. However for different activities you are charged individual tariffs or you can choose to go for a package tariff. Make sure you carry a waterproof bag and wear warm clothes with sensible shoes and have a raincoat on standby in case of rain.

If you would like to prolong your experience with nature then visit the environment friendly Shangri-La’s Tanjung Aru Resort and Spa Kota Kinabalu that is a tranquil hotel in Kota Kinabalu just 10 minutes from Kinabalu International Airport, with ample cuisine, private beach, idyllic view, luxurious rooms and suites and plenty of fun recreation to choose from.
